Born in a smaller city-state of Miletus, Althaia's beauty and sharp wits were known by many in her hometown. Her life changed drastically when an Athenian merchant discovered her and offered to be her sponsor if she wanted to move to Athens with the promise to pay her family debts. Despite some resistance at first, she decided to go along with the merchant offer and moved to Athens.
